The Metropolis GZM
Metropolis GZM — Leader in New Mobility
Sometimes, a look from a different perspective is worth it, to leave the conventional way of seeing the world, and things will take on a completely new and better dimension. This is how we have approached transport and urban mobility issues.
Under the Transport GZM brand, we are creating one of Europe’s largest public transport systems. In its implementation, we are boldly embracing innovative and environmentally friendly solutions so that residents can move around quickly and comfortably. This is quite a challenge, as we are the largest metropolis in this part of Europe. As a self-governing community, we exist to join forces around shared challenges and issues. To make life more comfortable, smarter and healthier for our residents.
This is the case, for example, with transport, one of our most important statutory activities. The GZM covers an area of 2,500 square kilometres. This is an area almost five times the size of Warsaw. We have around 1800 vehicles on the network: mostly buses, but also trams and trolleybuses. They travel more than 100 million kilometres a year and stop at 7,000 stops.
Above all, we focus on the environment. In our fleet, we are increasing the number of zero-emission vehicles, primarily eclectic buses. At the end of this year, these will also include hydrogen-powered buses. However, the development of transport and urban mobility is not only about rolling stock. It is also about integrating different modes of transport into one system. Today, every passenger of GZM Transport buying a 30-day ticket can travel by as many as five means of transport: regional train, bus, trolleybus, tram and on a Metrorower.
Metrorower is the largest urban bicycle-sharing system in Poland and the third largest in Europe. The system has 7,000 two-wheelers and 924 docking stations. As the only one in the country, Metrorower is also part of the GZM Transport tariff. Every holder of a medium- or long-distance ticket can use a bicycle for 60 minutes a day at no additional charge. This is so far the only solution of its kind in Poland.
With each passing year, we attach more and more importance to the railway. Ultimately, the Metrokolej railway system is planned to become the most important means of transport in our agglomeration. We are already financing additional connections in the GZM area. And thanks to ongoing or commencing investments in railway infrastructure, which we are actively supporting, there will be a significant increase in the number of railway lines and stops.
All this is influencing the gradual transformation of our region. The formerly separate industrial and mining areas are now a single organism. Together, locally, we are looking for solutions to global problems. Global both on a micro scale for the 41 municipalities that make up our metropolis and on a macro scale for the challenges faced by all cities and metropolises.
